Reflection on EDPUZZLE Task – Dating Conversation

Reflection on EDPUZZLE Task – Dating Conversation

1. Choice of Video
I selected a video featuring a natural dating conversation between two people meeting for the first time. This topic is engaging and relatable, making it an excellent resource for improving students' listening and speaking skills in a real-life context. The dialogue includes useful expressions for greetings, small talk, giving compliments, and making invitations—all essential language functions for social interactions.

2. Learning Objectives & Sequence of Activities

Objectives:

  • To develop listening comprehension skills using authentic dialogue.
  • To introduce and practice common expressions for dating and casual conversations.
  • To encourage students to apply these expressions in speaking tasks.
  • To promote independent learning through a flipped classroom approach.

Activity Sequence:

  • Pre-listening: Students brainstorm common phrases used in first meetings and dating scenarios. They discuss their experiences with making small talk and giving compliments.
  • During listening (via EDPUZZLE): Students watch the edited video at home, answering interactive multiple-choice and open-ended questions embedded in the video.
  • Post-listening: In class, students engage in:
    1. Role-play: Recreating a similar conversation using target phrases.
    2. Discussion: Identifying cultural differences in dating etiquette.
    3. Creative task: Writing their own dating dialogue and performing it in pairs.

3. Flipping the Classroom
I implemented a flipped classroom approach by assigning the video as homework. This allowed students to engage with the material at their own pace, focusing on comprehension before practicing in class. As a result, in-class time was used more effectively for speaking activities, boosting student participation and confidence.

4. Reflection on the Experience

  • Successes:

    • Students found the topic fun and engaging, which motivated them to participate.
    • The interactive EDPUZZLE questions helped maintain focus and reinforced comprehension.
    • Role-playing activities encouraged spontaneous speaking and real-life application of language.
  • Challenges:

    • Some students did not complete the video task at home, which required a quick recap in class.
    • A few struggled with understanding natural speech speed and informal phrases.
  • Improvements for Next Time:

    • Assign a short comprehension quiz to ensure video completion.
    • Provide a vocabulary guide before watching to aid comprehension.
    • Offer more structured speaking prompts for students who need additional support.
